Wednesday dinner: Salmon, tomatoes, gnocchi
A variation on a previous salmon-and-gnocchi dinner. This version took around 15 minutes, start to finish. Serves 1 (bob is anti-salmon, and hence had toast instead). Heat oil in a small frying pan, and cook a salmon fillet until just cooked through. Remove from the pan, and use two forks to pull it into flakes. Add loads of chopped garlic to the oil remaining in the pan, and cook until...

Vegetable and bean stew. A base of chopped onions, garlic, carrots, and celery. Flavoured with veg stock, sundried tomato purée, finely-chopped olives, a good splash of white wine. Free-range boar chops, patted dry, seasoned with salt on the bottom side, spread with a mixture of chimichurri and...

Monday dinner: dudhi, galka, parwal, rice
Bob went on a Flâneurs excursion which took him to Southall, so of course I asked him to bring back some interesting vegetables for me to cook. He chose a round dudhi, a galka, and some parwal. Bottle gourd curry. I used the dudhi and the galka in this. Parwal and potato bhaji. Served with basmati rice done in the rice cooker.

Friday dinner: Lentils, chicken, broccoli, bread
Lentil soup with (optional) chicken and broccoli. Sauté finely-chopped onions, carrots, celery, and garlic. Cook red lentils in water in a separate pan until mostly gone mushy, then purée and add to the vegetables. Add vegetable stock, season with soy sauce and Worcestershire sauce (I used vegan Worcestershire sauce since I wanted to have a vegan option for this). Simmer for as long as you...

Saturday dinner: pork, beans, cauliflower, rice
Slow-cooked pork belly with flageolet beans. Leftovers from Tuesday. I still have a couple more portions in the freezer. Roasted cauliflower. Break cauliflower into small florets, toss with olive oil, roast in the oven at 180˚C until browned. Vermicelli rice. I finished the cooking in the rice cooker, rather than on the stove. It worked fine.

Thursday dinner: Salmon, artichoke hearts,...
Spaghetti with salmon and artichoke hearts. Start some spaghetti cooking. Fry a salmon fillet on both sides until just cooked but not overcooked. Use two forks to pull it into large flakes. Add quartered artichoke hearts and some kind of herb paste (I used chimichurri from the freezer; pesto would work too) along with a spoonful of double cream and a spoonful of cooking water from the pasta. ...

Skin-on pork belly, blanched and cut into chunks; dried flageolet beans, soaked overnight; onions, sliced and sautéed in olive oil; smoked garlic, thinly sliced; a sprinkling of fennel seeds; a half-litre bottle of applewood cider; a generous quantity of vegetable stock. In the slow cooker for 8 hours. Served with some cornbread I had in the...

Monday dinner: broccoli, artichoke hearts, gnocchi
Gnocchi with artichoke hearts and broccoli. More assembly than cooking, really. Boil a pan of water, add some small broccoli florets, boil for about 3 minutes, add some gnocchi (from a packet), boil 2 more minutes, drain. Add some quartered artichoke hearts (from a can) and a few dollops of tomato sauce (from a jar), mix well. Grind some black pepper, grate some hard cheese, serve.

Friday dinner: Salmon, cabbage, gnocchi
A repeat of a previous “bob’s out, so I can eat lactose” dinner. I didn’t have leeks, so instead I used sliced spring onions and finely-sliced hispi (pointed cabbage).

Wednesday dinner: Cabbage, vegetarian sausages,...
Sweet and sour cabbage stew with vegetarian sausages. The stew base was onions, smoked garlic, chopped gherkin, chopped salted chillies (剁椒), tinned tomatoes, veg stock, smoked paprika, sugar. The sausages were Linda McCartney brand, cooked from frozen in the oven for 15 minutes then cut into four pieces per sausage and added to the stew once the cabbage had wilted down a bit. Served with...

Monday dinner: salmon, greens, chicken, glass...
Chinese again: a cold dish and a hot dish served with rice. Mouthwatering chicken (口水雞/kǒu shuǐ jī). This was made with some of the chicken I poached yesterday. Fish soup with pickled greens (酸菜魚/suān cài yú). I also added some soaked glass noodles (粉絲/fěn sī) just before adding the fish. Served with leftover jasmine rice from last night.

Chinese dinner tonight: a cold dish, two hot dishes, and jasmine rice done in the rice cooker. Jellyfish salad with chicken and cucumber. Tomato and mung bean noodle casserole. I used canned tomatoes. Steamed eggs with dried...

Wednesday dinner: Courgette, aubergine, tomatoes,...
A simple tomato sauce made by sauteeing finely-chopped onions, carrots, and garlic in olive oil; then adding a can of tomatoes, some chopped olives, some chopped chillies, a squeeze of honey, and simmering for a bit. Added chopped courgettes and aubergines, simmered until they were cooked. Served with gnocchi (the rest of the packet I used yesterday) and black pepper. I had grated parmesan on...
